Lipoedema
Lipoedema is a disorder of the adipose or fat tissue and it almost wholly seen in women. It is thought to affect 11% of the population so it is very common but still little understood.
Lipoedema, spelt as lipedema in the US, presents as enlargement of the lower body, particularly the thighs, knees, calves and ankles, and sometimes the upper arms. It is often confused with lymphoedema, which is due to a malfunction of the lymphatic drainage system, although sometimes the two conditions can co-exist.
The exact cause has not been identified but hormones and their fluctuations are likely to be a factor as it often presents initially during puberty, pregnancy or the menopause. It is not caused by poor diet or a sedentary lifestyle, although they can play a role, and the fat deposits are resistant to any weight loss efforts.
Signs you may have Lipoedema
- Excess fat on the buttocks, thighs and legs which is typically symmetrical and out of proportion to the upper body
- Cut off point at the ankles
- Ability to lose weight from the upper body but not from the lower body
- Painful legs that are sensitive to pressure
- A sensation of heaviness in the lower body
- Swelling that doesn’t dissipate even when the legs are elevated
- Tendency to bruise easily
- Skin appears dimpled
Liposuction for lipoedema
Although there is no cure for lipoedema, liposuction can reduce the fat deposits, greatly improving the aesthetic appearance of the lower body, increasing mobility and reducing discomfort.
There are several liposuction techniques. All remove fat cells through suction, but they vary in terms of the technology used. Dr Mooz uses Vaser and MicroLipo to treat lipoedema with highly effective results.
As with traditional liposuction, a solution composed of saline, local anaesthetic, and adrenaline is first inserted into the target area to help break up the fat cells. In MicroLipo, a specially designed microcannula is inserted which emulsifies the fatty tissue, before it is suctioned out. The microcannula means that there is less damage to the surrounding tissue. Vaser harnesses ultrasound energy to liquefy the fat, causing less damage to the structures of the dermis.
